Fees are another important difference.

For experienced crypto users, decentralized exchanges can provide something fundamentally different: direct access to blockchain-based markets without requiring the same custodial relationship.

The trade-off is that you become responsible for much more.

That’s the key distinction.

CEX = convenience and managed infrastructure

DEX = control and direct blockchain interaction

Neither approach is universally superior.

The Future May Not Be CEX vs DEX

The more interesting possibility is that we’ll continue using both.

Centralized exchanges are good at onboarding users, handling fiat, providing familiar trading interfaces, and managing complex infrastructure behind the scenes.

DEXs are good at permissionless on-chain trading, self-custody, composability, and giving users direct access to blockchain markets.

We could eventually see more products combining elements of both models.

A platform might offer a simple interface while allowing users to maintain greater control over their assets.

That’s already a direction worth watching.
